Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics Engagement

My Passion for STEM Engagement

I've always believed that science and technology should be accessible to everyone, not locked away in labs or academic papers. That's why I started writing books on topics like solar power and fuel cells—I wanted to break down complex ideas into something anyone could pick up and understand. For me, however, writing is just the start. The real magic happens when I can share my passion for STEM face-to-face, whether that’s in a classroom, a workshop, or a public talk.

Hands-On in the Classroom

There's nothing more rewarding than seeing that "lightbulb moment" when a student gets their hands on a piece of technology and it just clicks. This is why I love leading hands-on workshops and masterclasses. I’ve had the privilege of delivering the Royal Institution Engineering Masterclasses, where the goal isn't just to talk about engineering but to do engineering. We build things, we test them, and we see science in action. My aim is always to demystify STEM and show young people that it's a creative, exciting field where they can make a real difference.

Engaging with the Public

Beyond the classroom, I'm committed to bringing science to the wider community. I actively seek out opportunities for public engagement, from giving talks at science festivals to explaining the latest developments in my field to community groups. My diverse background, which blends engineering with business and sustainability, allows me to connect the dots for people in a way that’s relevant to their lives. For me, being an academic isn't just about research; it's about starting conversations and fostering a public appreciation for the science and technology that shapes our world.
